prefix | a morpheme added to the beginning of a word to modify its meaning, for example as pre- in prefix, con- in conjure, re- in reheat, etc. |
suffix | a morpheme added to the end of a word to modify its meaning. |
morpheme | the smallest linguistic unit within a word that can carry a meaning, such as "un-", "break", and "-able" in the word "unbreakable" |
affix | parts of a word that are at the beginning or end and change the meaning of the word |
context clues | clue words used to help readers understand the meaning of unknown words |
figurative language | language that contains or uses figures of speech, especially metaphors, similes, imagery, personification, hyperbole, etc. |
imagery | the work of one who makes images or visible representations of objects |
text structures | how the author organizes their non-fiction text. Examples include: compare and contrast, cause and effect, sequence, description, and problem/solution |
