Types of Assessments
Question | Answer |
---|---|
norm -referenced assessments | assessments used to gauge a student success by comparing their scores to a theoretical "average" score achieved by students of the same age/grade level |
criterion-referenced assessments | assessments that are scored based on each student's individual ability to show mastery of specific learning standards; students are deemed successful if they are able to achieve mastery of concepts that are appropriate for their age/grade level |
Informal Reading Inventory | (IRI) aka Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI); a survey used to assess the instructional needs of individual readers; determines the reader's grade-level reading, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, oral reading accuracy, word recognition/meaning, etc. |
universal screening assessments | brief surveys given to all students at the beginning of each school year, which are used to determine the mastery of critical skills and concepts; repeated about 3 times a year |
diagnostic assessments | used to help educators make sense of universal screening assessment scores; teachers can use this to identify the specific educational gaps of individual students and use that info to modify and differentiate instruction |
progress monitoring | used to determine if the educational interventions & strategies put in place (based on the diagnostic testing) are actually working |
formal assessments | used to determine a student's overall achievement and can be used to compare each student's abilities to their peers; often shared with students to determine whether or not they're performing at an appropriate level for their age/grade level |
informal assessments | use performance-driven tasks to guide instruction and provide informal ratings about each student's individual progress |
curriculum alignment | the act of teaching students the concepts that they will eventually be tested on |
cultural bias | avoiding this ensures that all students are given access to all relevant lessons, instruction, and materials; all students are given a fair opportunity to succeed on any given assessment |
