Latch Key Children

Teach the parent to designate… A neighbor who is usually home for help in emergencies
Teach the parent to teach the child… Their own name, telephone number, address, parent’s names, and safe telephone behavior
Teach the parent to leave… Work telephone numbers with the child, and tape recorded messages for the child to decrease loneliness
Teach the parent to lock up… Firearms, or remove them from the home
Teach the parent to prepare… A first aid kit and designate the location
Teach the parent to review… Fire safety rules, route of escape, and walk through it with the child
Teach the parent to address… Street safety with the child when returning from school, including precautions with strangers
Teach the parent to consider obtaining… A pet for the child
Teach the parent to be… Home on time or to call the child
Teach the parent to recommend… Specific activities for the child rather than television
Teach the parent help the child to feel… Successful and appreciated
Teach the parent to assess… The home and neighborhood for hazards specific to their locale
