Apprentice Person who works for a skilled laborer to learn a trade or art.
Indentured servants Pay for their voyage, work to pay off their debt, (usually about 7 years) then free.
Slave trade Buying and selling of people for profit.
Artisan Does their work by hand - skilled trade (blacksmith, baker, carpenter, etc.)

Captives Taken from homes in Africa against their will.
Backcountry Land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean (near Virginia) - also called foothills
Renaissance man A person with many talents and areas of knowledge
Why did so many Europeans make the voyage to North America? Colonies offered a better way of life - cheap land, greater opportunities to earn a living, and religious freedom
In the 1700s, what European ethnic groups came to North America? English, Scottish, Welsh, German (England, Scotland, Wales, Germany)
How did the slave trade effect Western Africa? It destroyed families, villages, and whole towns
What was traded for human beings in Africa? Goods - mainly rum, cloth, guns - anything to make a profit
How was the voyage for indentured servants similar to African captives? It was a difficult, long trip, with bad food, and cramped conditions
How was the voyage of indentured servants different to African captives? Captives were chained together laying down, could not move, had to ‘do their business’ right there, disease was rampant, many died
How did the lighting rod improve people’s lives? It saved homes and barns from burning - it attracted the lighting to the rod (not the building) and directed the electricity into the ground
Why did many different religious groups settle in Philadelphia? It was a more tolerant city - accepting of different groups of people
What was the main way people earned a living in the colonies? Farming
