Term | Definition |
---|---|
electromagnetic spectrum | The entire range of all electromagnetic waves. |
electromagnetic wave | A disruption in an electromagnetic field that carries energy, even through the vacuum of space. |
gamma ray | A high-energy photon that is emitted from a nucleus when a radioactive isotope experiences gamma decay. |
infrared wave (IR) | An electromagnetic wave that is just below (less energetic than) red visible light; used in astronomy, medical imaging, and wireless devices. |
microwave | A wave from the upper end of the radio wave band; used for navigation, communication, and cooking. |
photon | A wave bundle, or particle, of electromagnetic energy. |
radio wave | The longest and lowest energy type of electromagnetic wave; used for navigation and communication. |
ultraviolet wave (UV) | An electromagnetic wave that is just beyond (more energetic than) violet visible light; used for medical treatment, dentistry, and killing bacteria. |
visible light | Electromagnetic waves that humans can see. |
x-ray | A form of electromagnetic energy with wave-lengths between 10 pm and 10 nm that is used for medical imagery, transportation security, and nondestructive inspection. |
