Constitutional Convention Held in May 1787 in Philadelphia's Independence Hall to improve the Articles of Confederation
Virginia Plan Edmund Randolph proposed a new federal constitution that would give power to the Central government
Great Compromise The agreement to create two house legislature
New Jersey Plan Called for a one-house legislator, the plan gave each state an equal number of votes, and an equal voice, in the federal government
Three-Fifths Compromise Under this agreement only three-fifths state's slave population would count when determining representations
Popular Sovereignty The idea that political authority belongs to the people
Federalism The sharing of power between a central government and the states that make up a country
Legislative Branch First branch, responsible for proposing or passing laws
Executive Branch Second branch, includes the president and the departments that help run the government
Judicial Branch Third branch, made up of all the national courts
Checks and Balances Kept any branch of government from becoming too powerful
