NSAID's | commonly used drugs contain a warning to avoid use during pregnancy |
Acetaminophen | best choice of analgesic for the pregnant woman |
Ibuprofen | NSAID of choice of drug for a nursing mother |
Codeine | opioid that is an exception and the only one not associated with teratogenicity |
Amoxicillin | anti-infective agent considered to be safe to use during pregnancy |
Erythromycin | the estolate form is not considered safe during pregnancy; all other forms are okay to use; concentrated in breast milk, no problems have been documented and the mother does not need to discard |
Tetracycline, Doxycycline, and Minocycline | are contraindicated during pregnancy |
Clindamycin | for patients susceptible anaerobic infections that are not sensitive to penicillin |
Warfarin, aspirin, and doxycycline | drugs that have been documented to produce skeletal abnormalities in in the fetus |
Metronidazole | can be used carefully during the first trimester, potential risk to the fetus should be considered; breast milk should be expressed and discarded during treatment and for 48 hours following the last dose; Carcinogenic found in animal studies |
Nystatin | drug used to treat Candida infections during pregnancy or breastfeeding |
Ketoconazole | not considered safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Shown to be teratogenic in rats, producing an abnormal number of digits. Breast milk must be discarded for 72 hours after stopping use of the drug. |
Nitrous Oxide | higher incidence of spontaneous abortions and birth defects |
Benzodiazepines (Chlordiazepoxide and Diazepam) | indicated for the treatment of status epilepticus during pregnancy; Floppy infant syndrome and physical dependence for mothers who used diazepam during pregnancy |
