TermDefinition
Contracture a condition of shortening and hardening of muscles, tendons, or other tissue, often leading to deformity and rigidity of joints.
Waste products excreted from or stored in inert form in a living body as a by-product of vital activity.
Empathy the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Aging Process It is a process that goes on over the entire adult life span of any living thing.
Infection The invasion and growth of germs in the body. The germs may be bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungi, or other microorganisms.
Pathogens a microorganism that causes, or can cause, disease.
Gloves personal protective equipment that are used to protect the wearer and/or the patient from the spread of infection or illness during medical procedures and examinations.
Policy book a course of action that should be taken every time a certain situation occurs
Blood pressure the pressure, measured in millimeters of mercury, within the major arterial system of the body.
Growth something that has grown or is growing.
Breathing the process of taking air into and expelling it from the lungs.
Hip replacement a surgeon removes the damaged sections of your hip joint and replaces them with parts usually constructed of metal, ceramic and very hard plastic.
Mobility the ability to move or be moved freely and easily.
Resident Independence having full autonomy over one's own life.
Privacy physical privacy of patients from other patients
Fire combustion or burning, in which substances combine chemically with oxygen from the air and typically give out bright light, heat, and smoke.
Anxiety a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.
Accidents an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury.
Transferring move from one place to another.
Wheelchair safety Always Use the Wheelchair Brakes When Necessary. Most manual wheelchairs will come with brakes that you can apply when the chair is not in motion. Make Sure the Patient Is Sitting Comfortably.
Communication means of sending or receiving information
Non-verbal communication occurs through facial expressions, gestures, body language, tone of voice.
Respectful treatment The treatment of others with deference in daily interactions, weighing their values, views, opinions and preferences.
Fowlers the patient is upright and the spine is kept straight. The upper part of the body is angled between 60 to 90 degrees.
Neglect Fail to care for properly.
OSHA A federals government agency that makes rules to protect workers from hazards on the job.
Combative resident Resident displaying violent or hostile behavior
Angry resident Resident feeling or showing strong discontent or resentment. A person who is clenching his fists and shouting.
Pulse a rhythmical throbbing of the arteries as blood is propelled through them, typically as felt in the wrists or neck.
Vital signs clinical measurements, specifically pulse rate, temperature, respiration rate, and blood pressure, that indicate the state of a patient's essential body functions.
Atrophy (of body tissue or an organ) waste away. Gradually decline in effectiveness or vigor due to underuse or neglect.
Musculoskeletal Includes bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissues. They work together to support your body's weight and help you move.
Call light A device used by a patient to signal his or her need for assistance from professional staff.
Dehydration A harmful reduction in the amount of water in the body.
Dentures A removable plate or frame holding one or more artificial teeth
Depression A common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.
Rehabilitation The action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy after imprisonment, addiction, or illness.
Denial the action of declaring something to be untrue.
Alzheimer's Progressive mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain.
Mask a covering for all or part of the face, worn as a disguise, or to amuse or terrify other people.
Protective equipment Includes clothing, gloves, face shields, goggles, facemasks, respirators, and other equipment to protect front-line workers from injury, infection, or illness.
Handwashing The action or process of washing one's hands.
