What are some examples of antiplatelet agents? Aspirin, clopidogrel, dipyridamole, pentoxifylline, ticlopidine
What is the action? Work at the initial step of the coagulation process preventing platelet adhesion.
What are the uses of aspirin? analgesic, anti-inflammatory, & antipyretic properties. It also has potent antithrombotic and hematologic effects.
What are the uses of Dipyridamole? used as an adjunt to warfarin in the prevention of postoperative thromboembolic complications.
What are the uses of Ticlopidine? useful for reducing the risk of fatal and nonfatal thrombotic stroke
What are the uses of the GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors ? are used to treat acute unstable angina and during percutaneous coronary antioplasty (PTCA) procedures. Their purpose is to prevent platelet aggregation and the formation of any kind of thrombus or embolus
What are the major side effects/adverse reactions to aspirin on the CNS? stimulation, drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, flushing
What are the major side effects/adverse reactions to aspirin on the GI? N&V, GI bleeding, diarrhea, heartburn
What are the major side effects/adverse Hem. reactions to aspirin? Thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, leucopenia, neutropenia, hemolytic anemia, bleeding
What are the major side effects/adverse reactions to Clopidogrel on the CV? Chest pain, hypertension, edema
What are the major side effects/adverse reactions to Clopidogrel on the CNS? flulike symptoms, HA, dizziness, fatigue
What are the major side effects/adverse reactions to Clopidogrel on the GI? Abdominal pain, dyspepsia, diarrhea, nausea
What are the major side effects/adverse reactions to Clopidogrel? Epistaxis and integumentary disorders including rash & pruritis
What are the major side effects/adverse reactions to Pentoxifylline on the CV? angina, dysrhythmias, palpitation, hypotension, chest pain, dyspnea
What are the major side effects/adverse reactions to on the CNS? HA, anxiety, tremors, confusion, dizziness
What are the major side effects/adverse reactions to on the GI? bloating, constipation, dry mouth, thirst, bad taste
What are the contraindications? Known drug allergy, Thrombocytopenia, Active bleeding, Leukemia, Traumatic injury, Recent stroke
What are the pharmacokinetics? Metabolized in the liver, Excreted via the kidney
What are the interactions of Ticlopidine w/ antacids? ↓ absorption
What are the interactions of Ticlopidine w/ digoxin? ↓ plasma level of digoxin
What are the interactions of Ticlopidine w/aspirin? NOT recommended to use with aspirin
What are the interactions of Dipyridamole w/aspirin? ↑ antiplatelet activity
What are the interactions of Aspirin + NSAIDS ? potentiate bleeding
What are the interactions of Aspirin + steroids or NSAIDS? ↑ ulcerogenic effects
What are the interactions of Aspirin and heparin with GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors? ↑ antiplatelet activity & ↑ likelihood of serious bleeding episode
What are 2 nursing dx to use with antiplatelet agents? 1. Ineffective tissue perfusion, Risk for trauma
