Directional Terms

Body Planes and Orientation

TermDefinition
Coronal/ Frontal Plane Divides the body into Anterior & Posterior sides
Sagittal Plane Divides the body into Right & Left sides
Transverse Plane Divides the body into Superior & Inferior ( Top & Bottom )
Anatomical Position A person Standing facing forward, arms at the side with palms forward
Proximal vs Distal Refers to the attachment of the trunk; use when describing the upper extremities ( arms) and lower extremities (legs)
Ventral/ Anterior Mean Front when referring to human
Dorsal/Posterior Mean back when referring to human
Superior vs Inferior Above and Below
Supine Lying on your back
Prone Lying on the belly
