Internal development (pregnancy) Following fertilization, the developing offspring stays inside of the body of the mother. This is more energy intensive, but increases survival rates of the offspring.
External development (eggs) Following fertilization, the developing offspring grows outside of the body of the mother, usually in an egg shell. This is less energy intensive, but the survival chances of the offspring goes down.
Zygote The cell with a full set of DNA that is created during fertilization.
Embryo An unborn or unhatched offspring in the process of development.
Fetus A more developed offspring that has started to develop specific cells, tissues, and organs.
