Skin Lesions

TermDefinition
Bulla (p) circumscribed collection of free fluid greater than 1 cm. (give an example)
Macule (p) circular, flat, discolored (brown, blue, red, or hyperpigmented); over 1 cm. (give an example)
Nodule (p) circular, elevated, solid lesion; over 1 cm; indicative of abnormal tissue growth. (can be two things...what are they?)
Patch (p) circumscribed, flat discoloration; larger than macules; lightening or darkening of skin. (can be caused by?)
Papule (p) superficial, solid elevation over 0.5cm; color varies; transitory (may go away). (give an example)
Plaque (p) superficial, elevated, solid, flat; topped lesion; larger than 1 cm. (can be caused by?)
Pustule (p) vesicles containing fluid (inflammatory cells, pus). (can occur in...? caused by...?)
Vesicle (p) collection of free fluid smaller than a bulla; occur often in patches of multiple vesicles. (can be caused by...?)
Wheal (p) edematous, transitory, plaque; may last a few hours; comes up all of a sudden and disappears all of a sudden. (give an example? can be caused by...?)
Scale (s) epidermal thickening; consists of flakes of plates of compacted desquamated layers of stratum corneum. (caused by...?)
Crust (s) dried serum or exudate on skin; on top of primary lesion.
Fissure (s) cracks or splits in the skin usually due to severe dry skin. (seen in skin conditions like...?)
Excoriation (s) linear erosion (loss of epidermis). (can be caused by...?)
Erosion (s) loss of epidermis - superficial. (give an example?) (can be caused by...?)
Lichenification (s) thickening of epidermis that comes from consistent rubbing or scratching of skin; epidermal changes have occurred; exaggeration of normal skin lines. (occurs with...?)
Scars (s) permanent alterations in skin color and thickness due to fibrotic changes during skin healing following damage to the epidermis
