Infilling Where open space presents an economic opportunity for landowners to build small multi-family housing units.
Urban Sustainability The study of cities and the practices to build them, that focuses on promoting their long term viability by reducing consumption, waste and harmful impacts on people and place while enhancing the overall well-being of both people and place.
Ecological Footprint The impact of a person or community on the environment, expressed as the amount of land required to sustain their use of natural resources.
Remediation Removing the contaminants in brownfields, which reduces health and safety risks to nearby residents and opens the land up for new development.
Redevelopment Focuses on converting an existing property to another, more desirable use. Can be used to address urban sprawl.
Urban Growth Boundary Geographical boundaries place around a city to limit suburban growth within that city.
Farmland Protection Policy Policies enacted by governments that protect farmland and prevent it from being sold into other uses.
Brownfields A property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.
Suburban Sprawl The shift away from cities and into surrounding suburbs, leading to the unmanaged growth of these suburbs.
Public Housing Housing built and owned by the government, rented to low income residents for a much lower price.
