Energy Unit Vocabulary Words

potential energy stored energy
kinetic energy energy of motion
law of conservation of energy energy cannot be created or destroyed
mechanical energy energy of motion that we can see with our eyes (form of kinetic energy)
electrical energy energy caused by the movement of electrons (form of kinetic energy)
thermal energy energy caused by the motion of atoms and molecules (also known as heat energy and is a form of kinetic energy)
radiant energy energy carried by an electromagnetic wave. Light is the most common example (form of kinetic energy).
sound energy energy caused by an objects vibrations of atoms (form of kinetic energy)
gravitational energy potential energy that depends on the height of an object
elastic energy potential energy that is stored when an object's shape is changed
chemical energy potential energy that is stored in chemical bonds between atoms
nuclear energy potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
turbine A device with blades that can be turned by water, wind, or steam. This is the mechanical energy that a generator converts to electricity.
generator A machine that converts mechanical energy from the turbine into electrical energy.
fossil fuels Coal, oil (petroleum), natural gas, propane and other fuels that are ancient remains of plants and animals. These are primary energy sources that we burn to get our energy.
geothermal energy the energy produced by heat within the earth
hydroelectric energy energy generated from moving water
wind energy energy obtained by harnessing the energy of the wind
solar energy energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy
biomass energy energy produced by burning things that were once living, such as wood and scraps of crops.
