Solutions

QuestionAnswer
colloid tiny particles stuck between intermediate particles Ex. Mayo, fog, milk
concentrated contains a large amount of solute to solvent
dilute contains a small amount of solute to solvent
electrolyte solution that conducts electricity (ex. sports drinks)
immiscible liquids that will NOT mix with each other (Ex. oil and water)
insoluble substances that will NOT dissolve
miscible liquids that will mix with each other
molarity the amount of moles of solute per liter of solvent; used to determine the concentration of a solution
non-electrolyte solution that does NOT conduct electricity
precipitant the solid substance in a suspension that settles to the bottom
saturated the max amount of solute in a solution (on the line)
solubility the ability of a substance to dissolve
soluble substances that will dissolve
solute the substance being dissolved (ex. salt)
solutions a homogenous mixture of particles less than 10-9 m in diameter
solvated The end result of solvation where the solute is surrounded by solvent
solvent The dissolving medium (Ex. water)
supersaturated MORE than the max amount of solute in a solution (above the line)
suspension A solution with larger particles that will settle out (Ex. Italian dressing, sand and water)
unsaturated LESS than the max amount of solute in a solution (under the line)
