American History Chapter 18 vocab

QuestionAnswer
Reconstruction to rebuild (in this sense to rebuild America) this lasted from 1865-1877
Radical Republicans A political party that was VERY against slavery. They also set up the Freeman's Bureau
Freedman's Bureau "This federal agency set up schools and hospitals for African Americans and distributed clothes, food, and fuel throughout the South."
Andrew Johnson Became president after the Lincoln was killed
Black Codes "limited the freedom of former slaves." These were laws that were put in place that made it hard for African Americans to live in the South
Civil Rights "rights—those rights granted to all citizens."
14th Amendment The 14th amendment is the amendment that was made to the Constitution in 1866. This gave equal rights to everyone under the law.
10% plan This was Lincoln's plan to help rebuild America after the Civil War.
Impeach To impeach someone is to try to remove someone (usually the president) from office.
Reconstruction Act of 1867 This was a plan that had five Union Generals go down to 5 districts in the South to make sure that the South was following the South was following the 14th Amendment.
Moderates "Most Republicans were moderates who believed that the federal government should stay out of the affairs of individuals and the states."
Aquitted to be found innocent in a trial at court
Tenure of Office Act This act was placed on President Johnson so that he could not fire the secretary of war
Hiram Revels "Hiram Revels of Mississippi, a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church." A U.S. senator
Veto To stop or end a bill
Freedman's Schools Freedman's Schools were started and run by the Radical Republicans
Sharecropping "a worker rented a plot of land to farm. The landowner provided the tools, seed, and housing. When harvest time came, the sharecropper gave the landowner a share of the crop."
Ku Klux Klan This was a secret klan or people in the South who's only goal was to make sure that African Americans do not have rights. They wanted to make sure that democrats came back to the south
Lynch to be acoused of a crime and then killed with out a trial
Thaddeus Stevens leader of the Radical Republicans
Charles Sumner was a senator from Massachusetts
Scalawag A person in the South that agreed with the Radical Republicans "these delegates were called scalawags (scoundrels) for going along with Radical Reconstruction."
Carpetbagger "carpetbaggers—white Northerners who had rushed to the South after the war." Northern people that wanted to be in the South for political reasons.
15th Amendment "stated that citizens could not be stopped from voting “on account of race color, or previous condition of servitude (This amendment, like the Fourteenth Amendment, did not apply to Native Americans on tribal lands.)"
Panic of 1873 A economic panic and a dip in the economy banks all over America collapsed
Ulysses S. Grant One the presidential election in 1870
Suffragist A person that wanted equal rights for everyone included women as well as voting rights
Compromise of 1877 Republicans compromised with the Southern Democrats on some issues in the South.
Samuel J. Tilden "governor of New York."
Rutherford B. Hayes "governor of Ohio."
