Acids and bases

What are the properties of acids? Corrosive, dangerous (sometimes), sour taste, weak or strong and can dissolve metal.
What is a base? A base is the chemical opposite of an acid.
Can bases be harmful? Yes bases can be harmful.
What can sodium carbonate be found in? Washing soda
What base is in drain cleaner? Sodium hydroxide.
What can magnesium hyrdroxide be found in? Heartburn relief.
What are some other bases? Soap, baking powder, toothpaste and bleach
What are properties of bases? Corrosive, dangerous (sometimes), bitter taste, weak or strong and feel slippery.
What precautions should be taken when working with acids/ bases? Avoid contact with skin, wear gloves, avoid splashing, wear a lab coat and protect eyes with safety glasses.
What is an indicator? Chemicals that show a colour changes bases on whether something is an acid or base.
What colour does litmus paper turn with acid? Blue paper turns to red.
What colour does litmus paper turn with a base? Red turns to blue.
What colour change happens when something is neutral? There is no colour change.
How do you make acids/ bases less concentrated? Add water to the acid/ base.
How many numbers are on a pH scale? 14
Which numbers are acidic on the pH scale? 0 to 6
What numbers are alkaline on the pH scale? 8 to 14
What number is neutral on the pH scale? 7
What is universal indicator paper? An indicator that changes colour to the concentration of an acid or alkali.
What happens if an acid an base mix? They neutralise.
