What is sinusitis? Inflammation of the mucous membranes of the sinuses.
What are the clinical finding of sinusitis? Nasal swelling, congestion, pain and facial pressure.
How is a diagnosis of sinusitis made? Based on history and manifestations.
What are the non-surgical treatments for sinusitis? Broad-spectrum antibiotics, analgesics, decongestants, steam humidification, hot and wet packs over the sinus area, nasal saline irrigations, increase fluids and no smoking.
What is Alergic Rhinitis commonly know as? Hay fever of allergies.
What are some main interventions for allergic rhinitis? Drug therapy including antihistamines and decongestants, antipyretics, antibiotics, steriods. Also, immunotherapy, avoidance of triggers and complementary and alternative therapy along with supportive therapy.
What is viral rhinitis commonly known as? The common cold.
What are some facts about viral rhinitis? It's spread by droplets and can survive on objects for up to 3 days.
What are some of the complications from viral rhinitis? Pharyngitis, sinusitis, otitis media, tonsilitis, lung infections.
What are the best ways to protect yourself from rhinitis? Avoid crowds and keep hands washed.
What is Phayngitis? Inflammation of the mucous membranes of the pharynx.
Is strep throat serious? Yes, it can lead to major medical complications.
What is a rare complication of pharyngitis? Epiglottitis
What are some on the treatments for pharyngitis? Anti-fungal medications, increased fluids and cool bland liquids.
What is tonsillitis and what are some of the treatments? Inflammation and infections of the tonsils and lymphatic tissues located on each side of the throat. Antibiotics and surgical interventions.
What is peritonsillar abscess? A complication of acute tonsillitis where pus behind the tonsils causes one-sided swelling with the deviations of the uvula.
How can peritonsillar abscess be treated? Drainage with needle and the completion of antibiotic regimen or surgery.
What is Laryngitis? The inflammation of the mucous membranes lining the larynx, possible including edema of the vocal cords.
What are some of the symptoms of laryngitis? Acute hoarseness, dry cough, difficulty swallowing, temporary voice loss (aphonia).
What are some disorders of the larynx? 1. Vocal cord paralysis. 2. Vocal cord nodules and polyps 3. Laryngeal trauma.
What causes laryngeal polyps? Excessive talking, singing and smoking. They can be removed but will usually come back. Normally only removed if airway is blocked.
What is upper airway obstruction? A life-threatening emergency in which an interruption in airflow through the nose, mouth, pharynx, or larynx occurs. It can be partial or complete.
What are some signs and symptoms of upper airway obstructions? Stridor, accessory muscle use, retractions, wheezing, tachycardia, cyanosis.
What is epistaxis? Nosebleed
When is an epistaxis become an emergency? When it is a posterior nasal bleed or, when the pt is on blood thinner or if the bleeding will not stop.
What is the minimum amount of time that must pass for a pt to have obstructive sleep apnea? For 20 seconds and must occur at least five times in one hour.
What is the purpose of a CPAP or BiPAP? To apply airway pressure to ensure breathing.
What is the common name for influenza? Flu
What is influenza? A highly contagious acute viral respiratory infection. It has symptoms of sever headache, muscle ache, fever, shills, fatigue, weakness, and anorexia.
Is there a cure for influenza? No, but there is a vaccination that is advisable and early treatment can shorten the symptoms.
What are the dangers of influenza? Pneumonia.
What are the major concerns of a fractured nose? Airway clearance and possible skull fracture.
Cancer of the nose and sinuses: Rare and can be benign or malignant. The onset is slow and manifestations resemble sinusitis. There is usually lymph enlargement on the side with the tumor. Treatment can be radiation and surgery.
