14th Amendment | Defined Citizenship. Born or naturalized in the U.s is a citizen. Prohibits states from taking away citizens rights.Freedmen Voting. |
15th Amendment | Constitutional amendment that gave African Americans the right to vote in all states. Prohibits states from denying citizens the right to vote on race, color, precious conditions or servitude |
Amnesty | The granting of pardon to a person for committing |
Carpetbagger | a nickname for a northerner who went south during Reconstruction in the hope of getting rich. |
Compromise of 1877 | A deal between republicans and Democrats that ended Reconstruction in exchange for giving African Americans rights and accepting hayes as president |

Sharecropper | A farmer that worked on land owned by another person; many freed slaves in the south became Sharecroppers after the Civil War |

Ku Klux Klan | A secret, racist organization that used violence and intimidation to keep African Americans from voting |

Why did Reconstruction not progress well | There were corrupt politicians that took bribes for their own personal gain. The Reconstruction programs were too expensive and poorly managed. |
