6.3 Element Families
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Alkali metals | Group 1, 1 electron in outer level, very reactive, soft, silver, shiny, low density; Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium, Francium |
alkaline soultion | A solution that has a pH above 7.0 (neutral) |
oxidation reaction | The loss of electrons from a substance involved in a chemical reaction. |
reduction reaction | A reaction in which a substance gains at least one electron |
electrolysis | the process in which an electric current is used to produce a chemical reaction, such as the decomposition of water |
Insoluble | incapable of being dissolved |
Alkaline earth metals | metallic elements in group 2 of the periodic table which are harder than the alkali metals and are also less reactive |
Transition metals | Groups 3-12, 1-2 electrons in the outer energy level, less reactive than alkali-earth metals, shiny, good conductor of thermal energy and electrical current, high density |
smelting | extract (metal) from its ore by a process involving heating and melting. |
steel | A form of iron that is both durable and flexible. It was first mass |
Halogens | the elements in group 17 of the periodic table, the most reactive non |
Halides | Minerals that contain a halogen ion plus one or more other elements |
exothermic | Chemical Reaction in which energy is primarily given off in the form of heat |
Noble gases | Group 18, stable elements that do not react. |
superconductor | a material that has almost zero resistance when it is cooled to low temperatures |
