pacifism | belief that disputes should be resolved peacefully without war |
Parliament | British national legislature that makes the laws and discusses issues of the country |
Patriots | colonist who actively opposed the British government taxes, fought for more freedom from King George III |

Saratoga | American victory that was turning point in the Revolutionary War |
Loyalists | colonists who remained loyal to King George throughout the Revolution |
fought over Ohio River valley | Native Americans, French trappers, English settlers |

militia | not part of the regular army but are citizens that may serve in the an emergency for the military |

Sons of Liberty | secret organization that worked to oppose the British Parliament’s requirements |

Marquis de Lafayette | French nobleman who joined the cause from American independence at age 19 |

George Rogers Clark | known for fighting the British in several battles and gave America a strong claim to the frontier |
Stamp Act | the law that required the colonies to help pay for stationing British troops in the colonies |
Proclamation of 1763 | document issued by King George III after the French and Indian War that marked land west of the Appalachians as solely for American Indians |
Continental Congress | group of colonists that represented the thirteen colonies to discuss how to deal with the British |
