Reaction formation Expresses opposite from what is felt
Regression Reverts to an earlier developmental level in response to stress
Repression Involuntary blocking of feelings that you dont realize youre doing
Sublimation Impulses to socially acceptable behaviors. example: punching bag
Suppression Voluntary blocking
Undoing Attempts to cancel out unacceptable behavior or thoughts
Suppression example I forgot we were suppose to get our CPR re-certified
Undoing example A professor criticizes his colleagues recent publications but compliments him on his choice of statistical procedures
Sublimation example A young man with intense aggressive and competitive drives becomes a star of the football team
Reaction formation example The recovered alcoholic living one day at a time takes advantage of every opportunity to get on his soap box to extol the evils of alcohol
Projection example The psychotic client yells at the nurse im not crazy you are
Displacement example The client is upset at the doctor for making him stay in the hospital another day. When the nurse enters the room, he yells at the nurse.
Repression example A woman who was raped is unable to recall the assault
Rationalization example A student is late handing in an assignment. She states the reason she is late is because an unexpected visitor kept her from going to library.
Denial example: The doctor tells mr smith that he has cancer. mr smith responds i dont have cancer. the tests are wrong.
Intellectualization example When asked feelings about her first clinical day the student discusses at length the use of defense mechanisms and stages of development
Compensation example jill was musically inclined but wasnt very good at sports therfore she spent hours practicing on the piano
Identification example mary and tina work together. tina tells mary you act just like our first clinical instructor
Introjection example A little girl scolds her doll, just like her mother scolds her
Regression example A 28 year old client sits in the corner rocking sucking her thumb
