7.1 Bonding

TermDefinition
Molecule two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
Compound A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
empirical forumla a chemical formula giving the simplest whole-number mole ratios of atoms in a compound; also called simplest formula
chemical bond An electrical interaction between positively charged nuclei and the negatively charged electrons of atoms that forms when the force of attraction is stronger than the force of repulsion
Electrostatic Force The force between electrically charged objects (like charges repel and opposite charges attract each other).
intramolecular bonds bonds within molecules
covalent bonding results from the sharing of electron pairs between two atoms
polar covalent bond A covalent bond in which electrons are not shared equally
non polar covalent bond equal sharing of electrons
ionic bonding Chemical bonding that results from the electrical attraction when electrons are transferred creating cations and anions
