10p Rule 1 Explanation | Always scan ahead, Look left right left. Get the big picture. First look left and right for pedestrians bikes and vehicles, making sure they are obeying their traffic signals, also looking for obstructions. Look left again, first lane you enter. |
10P Rule 2 | When stopped in Traffic - Why - Have an escape route |
10P Rule 2 Explanation | When stopped I leave enough space between my front bumper and the rear bumper in front of me. incase that vehicle breaks down I have a way to get around. |
10P Rule 3 | Count 1-2-3 after vehicle starts to move. - keeps you away from billboards |
10p Rule 3 Explanation | count 1-2-3 after the car ahead has started to move. This will establish a space cushion and allow me to bring my eyes up to the driving scene ahead. |
10p Rule 4 | 4-6 second follow times up to 30mph 6-8 seconds for speeds over 30mph Buys time |
10P Rule 4 explanation | calculate distance - 1/1000 one, 1/1000 two this is used for following distance. |
10p Rule 5 | 8-12 second eye lead time - centers car in traffic lane |
10p rule 5 Explanation | 8-12 second eye lead time is the depth my eyes should be most of the time I'm driving. use stationary object to calculate. this is maintained depth of vision. |
10p Rule 6 | Scan steering wheels - take path of least resistance |
10p Rule 6 explanation | always scan steering wheels of parked cars, to see if someone is pulling out or exiting vehicle. if you can't determine if the vehicle is occupied treat it as such. |
10p Rule 7 | Stale Green lights - Smooth stops and turns |
10p rule 7 Explanation | A stale green light is one I didn't see change. a point of decision must be made between my front bumper and the stop line, should the light change before that point I stop, after I would continue without accelerating/hesitating. weather and speed |
10p Rule 8 | Eye contact - Establishes eye to eye contact |
10p Rule 8 Explanation | always establish eye contact with pedestrians, bikes, and other vehicles to eliminate uncertainty. use 3 tools horn, lights, and signals. |
10p Rule 9 | pulling from the curb - communicate in traffic- horn, lights,signals. |
10 p Rule 9 Explanation | When pulling from the curb I always signal my intentions by using my traffic side turn signal. I use my mirror and look over my traffic side shoulder to check blind spot. turn signal off only when completely in lane. |
10p Rule 10 | Use mirrors and gauges - keeps eyes ahead of car. |
10p rule 10 Explanation | I check mirror every 5-8 seconds - lane position - traffic conditions- mechanical problems. when traffic allows I sub a mirror check with one of my gauges. always back front after mirror check. never mirror to mirror. |
