Auricular Hematoma "Cauliflower Ear" - Caused by compression or shear injury to ear.
Orbital Hematoma "Black Eye" - Caused by a blow to the area around the eye.
Orbital Fracture Caused by direct trauma to the eyeball. Signs: blurred vision, diplopia, restricted eye movement, downward displacement of the eye, soft-tissue swelling and hemorrhaging, numbness.
Corneal Abrasions Caused by attempts to remove foreign object from eye by rubbing. Signs: Mild to severe pain, watery eye, photophobia, pain with blinking, decreased focusing ability, spasm of the orbicular muscle of the eyelid.
Hyphema Caused by direct trauma to the eye. Major injury that leads to serious problems. Signs: collection of blood in anterior chamber of the eye, visible reddish tinge in anterior chamber (blood may turn pea green), vision is partially/completely disrupted.
Retina Detachment Caused by a blow to the eye which can partially or completely separate the retina from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium. Signs: painless, flash of light, curtain falling over the eye, may report floating specks, blurred vision.
Acute Conjunctivitis Caused by bacterial infection, allergies, irritation by wind, dust, smoke, or air pollution. Associated with common cold or upper respiratory conditions. Signs: Eyelid swelling w/ purulent discharge, itching associated with an allergy, burning or itching.
"Raccoon Eyes" Ecchymosis around the eyes, usually a sign of a head injury or skull fracture.
Battle's Sign Ecchymosis behind the ears, usually a sign of a head injury or skull fracture.
Signs of Concussion Appears dazed or confused. Is unsure of game, score, or opponent. Moves clumsily. Answers questions slowly. Shows behavior or personality changes. Can't recall events prior to or after hit.
Symptoms of Concussion Headache Nausea Balance problems or dizziness Double or fuzzy vision Feeling sluggish Feeling foggy or groggy Concentration or memory problems Confusion
Second Impact Syndrome Result of rapid swelling and herniation of brain after a second head injury before initial injury symptoms have resolved. Impact disrupts the brain's blood autoregulatory system leading to swelling, increasing intracranial pressure.
Epidural Hematoma Blow to head or skull fracture which tears the meningeal arteries and leads to creation of hematoma.
Subdural Hematoma Result of acceleration/deceleration. Forced tear of blood vessels that bridge between the brain and skull.
Post Concussion Syndrome Long-term symptoms after severe or repetitive TBI's. Memory, mood, and attention deficits are common complaints. Intellectual dullness, personality changes, fatigue and headaches.
Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media) Accumulation of fluid in the middle ear caused by local and systemic infection and inflammation.
Shallow breathing indicates... Shock
Hot, dry skin indicates... Disease, infection, and/or over exposure to environmental heat
Cool, clammy skin indicates... Trauma, shock, and/or heat exhaustion
Cool and dry skin is displayed because of... Overexposure to cold
Irregular or gasping breath is... Cardiac and/or Pulmonary related
Red Skin Color indicates... Heat stroke, diabetic coma, and/or high blood pressure
White Skin Color indicates... Insufficient circulation, shock, fright, hemorrhage, heat exhaustion and/or insulin shock
Blue Skin Color indicates... Circulated blood is poorly oxygenated
Constricted Pupils indicates... Injury to the central nervous system and/or intake of a depressant drug
Dilated Pupils indicates... Head injury, shock, heat stroke, hemorrhage, and/or intake of a stimulant drug
