Cartographer A person who creates maps
Absolute Distance Distance that can be measured using a standard unit of length
Relative Distance Distance determined in relation to other places or objects
Absolute Direction The cardinal directions north, south, east and west
Relative Direction Direction based on a person's perception, such as left, right, up or down
Map Scale The relationship of the size of the map to the size of the area it represents on Earth's surface
Map Projection The scientific method of depicting Earth’s round surface to a flat map
Robinson Projection Be able to ID Image
Mercator Projection Be able to ID Image
Gall-Peters Projection Be able to ID Image
Azimuthal Projection Be able to ID Image
Reference Maps A map that focuses on the location of places
Physical Maps A map that primarily features landforms
Political Maps A map that primarily features countries, cities, borders and capitals
Thematic Maps Any map that focuses on one or more variables to show a relationship betwen geographic data
Isoline Maps A map that uses lines of equal value to represent data
Graduated Symbol Map A map in which the size of the symbol varies in proportion to the intensity of the mapped variable.
Cartogram A map that uses the relative size of political units to convey a value.
Dot Map A map in which a dot represents some frequency/occurrence of the mapped variable.
Choropleth Map A map in which a specific variable is depicted with shading, patterns, or colors.
