What is the definition of Parenteral medications? Injected or infused into a body part, NOT absorbed through GI tract.
What is Intradermal? into dermal layer *we won’t do
What is Subcutaneous? between dermis & muscle – “Bevel up”
What is Intramuscular? 90º angle – straight down/in
What are 4 reasons for administering medication by injection? 1. Properties of drug inactivated or altered by GI tract (Insulin), Client unconscious, Unable to swallow, Desire faster effect
What are the advantages of administering medication by injection? Rapid absorption, Predictable results, Dose Accuracy, Give when PO not an option, Emergency meds
What are the disadvantages of administering medication by injection? Can’t take it back, Adverse Reactions more severe (depends on drug), May be erratic absorption, May cause permanent damage – hit nerve, Anxiety – fear, Expense – alchohol swab, sterile equip, sterile drugs
What are the reasons for erratic absorption of medication by injection? edema, adipose tissue, poor circulation
What is the needle length for a Standard IM injection? 1 - 1 ½ “
What is the guage for a Standard IM injection? 20 - 22 g
What is the hub? end of needle attaches to syringe – outside doesn’t have to be sterile
What is the volume of a TB syringe? .5cc or less
What is the TB syringe used for? skin testing, diagnostic testing, very accurate
What size does an Insulin syringe come in? 100 unit / 50 unit
What is the volume of regular syringes? 5 – 10cc
which parts of a syringe, must remain sterile? Avoid touching – plunger it goes into barrel, bevel and needle must be sterile
What type of Asepsis needs to be followed when giving an injection? wash hands, clean tops of vials, cleanse site thoroughly, gloves on non-dominant hand
What safety precautions should be practiced when giving an injection? avoid needle sticks, Never Recap Needle, Always wear Gloves, Don’t use your teeth put cap down and slide it in
What should you do if you Stick self b/4 client? new needle
What should you do if you Stick self after client ? bleed it, incidence report
When should the Deltoid muscle be used for injections? Only use w/ very muscular people. Acromial process
Where is the Vastus lateralis? Front/side of thigh – NOT rectus femorus which is the front center thigh
Where is the Ventrogluteal? Greater Trochanter / anterior superior iliac spine
Where is the d. Dorsogluteal? Major sciatic nerve, blood vessels
When giving injections in the abdomen how far should you stay from the umbilicus? 2”
What is an example of a drug that comes in an ampule? Lasix
How should a filter needle be used with an ampule? use filter needle only to draw drug out - never inject with this, switch back to needle use – 19 g
How do you correctly mix 2 meds in a syringe? Be sure drugs are compatible, Air into Vial A – needles don’t touch solution, Air into Vial B – withdraw solution B, Change needle if A is multi dose, Withdraw solution vial A, Change needle & administer med
What skin sites should you avoid using for an injection? Bruises, rash, tattoo, moles
What size needle should be used for an intradermal injection? ¼ - ½ inch
What guage should be used for an intradermal injection? 26-27
What angle should be used for an intradermal injection? 15 degree, almost flat
