Roger Williams He was a puritan minister who was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony- he wanted separation of church and state. Banished by John Winthrop- founded RI
John Winthrop Chosen as first governor, A puritan- formed colony's gov't and shaped its legislative policy. He envisioned the colony, centered in present-day Boston, as a "city upon a hill" from which Puritans would spread religious righteousness throughout the world.
Mayflower compact 1620 - The first agreement for self-government in America. It was signed by the 41 men on the Mayflower and set up a government for the Plymouth colony.
Plymouth- where they landed- the Pilgrims' settlement; located in the Cape Cod area of Massachusetts; they'd escaped from religious persecution in England.
Puritans- *think purify* English Protestants who wanted to purify or reform the Church of England. They thought the Church of England to be too like the Catholic Church.
Pilgrims- They were English Protestants that wanted to separate from the Church of England.
Massachusetts Bay Colony Founded in 1630- King of England gave a charter to the Puritans to start the colony- It includes the towns of Boston and Salem.
Great migration It was the period of 1629-1640 when 20,000 Puritans fled England and came to settle the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
New England colonies Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire
Middle Colonies New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware
South colonies Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina
What were the advantages of living in the New England Colonies? -Religious freedom -Winter killed germs -Healthy environment -Easy access to the sea -Small animals to eat -Very democratic government
What were the disadvantages of living in the New England Colonies? -Squanto had to help them learn how to live off of the land. -Rocky soil, not good for growing a lot of things -Cold weather killed a lot of colonists -Winter killed crops -Died of starvation.
What did Roger Williams do after he was banished? He formed his own colony, Rhode Island in 1636- there he advocated for religious tolerance and the separation of church and state.

Cash crop Crops that were sold to make money- Single crop economy was initially based on tobacco and later rice, indigo, and cotton.

Problems with plantations? needed a lot of labor and then slaves were used
Mercantilism A colony exists for the sole purpose of helping/benefiting the mother country and the colonies wealth is based on how much gold/silver a place has made the mother country
Why did settlers go to Jamestown and Roanoke They wanted to make money- they were entrepreneurs, did not want to do manual labor
