Albany Congress (1754) | delegates of seven colonists and 150 members of the Iroquois Confederacy met in Albany, New York. Showed they could work together. |
First Continental Congress (1774) | met in Philadelphia and formed a Continental Army that made a final attempt to avoid war. Was a response to colonists asking for Britain to repeal taxes. |
Second Continental Congress (1775) | relations with Britain weren't improving, started the Continental Army led by George Washington. Going to war. |
Declaration of Independence (1776) | Thomas Jefferson and John Hancock wrote the Declaration of Independence |
Thomas Paine 1776 | published a booklet called Common Sense and argued that people have the right to govern themselves rather than be ruled by a king |
Tomas Jefferson | wrote the declaration of independence. he included key political ideas to explain why the colonies wanted freedom. |

Patrick Henry | gave an emotional speech to the Virginia House of Burgesses that convinced many Virginians to oppose the stamp act. said give me liberty or give me death |
John Adams | wrote the decoration of independence with Jefferson and Franklin. also defended soldiers in a trial, because he believed everyone as a right to a free trial |
Olive Branch Petition | Letter to King George Saying that the colonist were still Loyal to Britian and that war could be avoided if they were given more freedom to govern themselves. The King never answered. |
