Atomic Nomenclature the system of names for atomic structures
Anterior front of an area in relationship to the entire body
Posterior back if an area in relationship to the entire body
Ventral directed toward the anterior
Dorsal directed toward the posterior
Superior an area that face toward the head and away from the feet
Inferior an area that faces away from the head and toward the feet
Apex or tip is the pointed end of a conical structure
Midsagittal plane or Median plane divides the body into equal left & right halves
Sagittal plane divides the body parallel to the midsagittal plane
Coronal plane Frontal plane divides the body at any level into anterior and posterior parts
Transverse plane or Axial plane divides the body at any level horizontally into superior and inferior parts
Median a structure located at the midsagittal plane or median plane
Medial an area closer to the midsagittal plane or median plane of the body or structure within the body or structure as a whole
Mesial of, relating to, or being the surface of a tooth that is next to the tooth in front of it or that is closest to the middle of the front of the jaw
Lateral an area farther from the midsagittal plane or median plane of the body or structure
Proximal an area closer to the midsagittal plane or median plane
Distal an area farther from the midsagittal plane or median plane
Distal in dentistry of, relating to, or being the surface of a tooth that is next to the tooth behind it or that is farthest from the middle of the jaw
Contralateral a structure on the opposite side of the body
Superficial a structure located toward the surface of the body
Deep a structure located inward away from the body surface
Internal the inner side of the wall of a hollow structure
External the outer side of the wall of a hollow structure
Midsagittal Section or Medial Section a division by any coronal (or frontal) plane
Sagittal Section a division by any sagittal plane
Coronal Section or Frontal Section a division by any coronal (or frontal) plane
Transverse Section or Axial Section a division by any traverse (or axial) plane
Sebum oily substance secreted by sebaceous glands
Sebaceous gland oil-secreting gland in the dermis that is associated with hair follicles
Subcutaneous the innermost layer of the skin, containing fat tissue
Lipocyte a fat cell
Dermis the skin layer deeper to the epidermis
Anesthetics applied to skin to deaden the pain
Antibiotics kill bacteria causing skin infections
Antifungals kill fungi infecting the skin
Anti-inflammatory drugs reduce skin inflammation or itching
Anti-parasitic kills mites or lice
Anti-septic used to kill bacteria in skin cuts and wounds or at a surgical site
Buccal structures closest to the inner cheek
Facial structures closest to the facial surface
Labial structures closest to the lips

Lingual Papillae small elevated structures covering the dorsal surface of the body of the tongue
Dorsal surface of the tongue the top of the tongue
Lingual Frenum a midline fold of tissue between the ventral surface of the tongue and the floor of the mouth
Labial Frenum fold of tissue located at the midline between the labial mucosa and the alveolar mucosa of the maxilla and the mandible
Maxillary Teeth the teeth of the maxilla or upper jaw
Mandibular Teeth the teeth of the mandible or jaw
Incisors anterior teeth that are the first and second from the midline and consist of both centrals and laterals, respectively
Canines anterior teeth that also are the third teeth from the midline in each quadrant
Premolars posterior teeth that are the fourth and fifth teeth from the midline in the permanent dentition and that include first seconds, respectively
Molars most posterior teeth including first, seconds, and thirds
Gingiva mucosa surrounding the maxillary and mandibular teeth, also known as the gums
Attached gingiva gingiva that tightly adheres to the bone over the roots of the teeth
Mucogingival junction the border between the alveolar mucosa and the attached gingiva
Marginal gingiva nonattached gingiva at the gingival margin of each tooth
Interdental gingiva attached gingiva between the teeth
Hard palate the firmer, whiter, anterior portion of the palate
Soft palate the yellower and looser posterior portion of the palate
Superior lip the upper lip, closest to the nose
Inferior lip the lower lip, closest to the chin
Oral region region of the head with the eyeball and all its supporting
Vermillion Zone darker appearance of lips
Vermillion Border outline of the entire lip from the surrounding skin
Philtrum vertical groove in the midline of the upper lip
Oral cavity the inside of the mouth
Maxilla the upper jaw
Mandible the lower jaw
Buccal Mucosa lines the inner proportions of the cheeks
Labial mucosa the inner portions of the lips
Mucosa mucous membrane lining the oral cavity
Alveolar Mucosa lines the inner portions of the cheeks
Labial Frenum fold of tissue located at the midline between the labial mucosa and the alveolar mucosa of the maxilla and the mandible
Apex of the tongue the tip of the tongue
Lingual Tonsils indistinctive layer of the lymphoid tissue located on the dorsal surface of the tongue's base
Muscular Triangle smaller triangle region of the neck inferior to the omohyoid muscle and a portion of the anterior cervical triangle
Occipital Triangle smaller triangle region of the neck superior to the omohyoid muscle and a portion of the posterior cervical triangle
Posterior Cervical Triangle lateral region of the neck
Sternocleidomastoid Muscle paired cervical muscle that serves as a primary landmark in the neck
Subclavian Triangle smaller triangular region of the neck inferior to the omohyoid muscle and a portion of the posterior cervical triangle
Submandibular triangle Portion of the anterior cervical triangle formed by the mandible and anterior and posterior bellied of the digastric muscle
Submental Triangle unpaired midline portion of the anterior cervical triangle created by the right and left anterior bellies of the digastric muscle and the hyoid bone
