Book 1 Ch.1.1 Scientific Inquiry

TermDefinition
Hypothesis A possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question; must be testable
Variable A factor that can change in an experiment
manipulated variable The one factor that a scientist changes during an experiment; also called independent variable.
responding variable Your DATA!!! - The factor that changes as a result of changes to the manipulated, or independent, variable in an experiment; also called dependent variable
Controlled Experiment An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time
Data Facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations
1st step of scientific method ask a question
2nd step of scientific method form a hypothesis
3rd step of scientific method experiment
4th step of scientific method collect data
5th step of scientific method analyze data
6th step of scientific method draw a conclusion

Quantitative observation An observation that deals with a number or amount
Qualitative observation deals with descriptions that cannot be expressed in numbers
Graph A way to organize data that may show trends and identify anomalous data. A picture of your data
Data table A way to organize data collected during an experiment
Scientific Inquiry The ongoing process of discovery in science; the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence they gather.
