history | the study of how people have lived in the past from prehistoric to modern times. |
industrialisation | a period of social and economic change that transforms a human group from an agricultral to an industrialised society. |
industrial revolution | the change from an agricultral country to an industrial one. |
revolution | a sudden, radical or complete change. |
trade union | a group of people within a job or industry that join toether to fight for improved working conditions. |
agricultral revolution | the change that saw significant improvement in farming techniques. |
new world | the western hemisphere, especially; the continental landmass of America. |
labour | physical work. |
demand | concerns the quantity of a product or service that consumers are willing to purchase at various prices. |
urban | means relating to a city/town. |
raw materials | substances that are either available naturally or produced by farmers. |
colony | a country or an area under the full or partial political control of another country. |
trade union lifestyle | women protested about equality in the workforce. women were exploited by owners. |
factory lifestyle | exploited by wealthy owners dangerous mining operations long hours, 10-12 per day little pay, breaks, water conditions were unsafe and lead to accidents |
child labor | children formed an integral part of the workforce, particulary in factories and mines. |
child labour - age | as young as four around 50% of the workforce was under 14 majority were between 11-16 years 1833, children under 9 were illegal to employ 1833, illegal to have children work more than 48hrs/wk |

agricultral definition - cause | planting crops system in order to achieve the best plantation. restored nutrients to the soil and made the land more productive and efficent. |
population boom - cause | began to rise in 18th century. many more people demanding everyday goods and services. extra people needed to be fed and clothed. higher demand led to more fatories, works and inventions. |
