What is the Jaeger eye card? | hold the card 14 inches away from the face with your elbow bent; assesses near sight |
How do you assess the external eye? | look at eyelids and eyelashes, eyeball in socket alignment, inspect lacrimal apparatus, inspect conjunctiva, inspect iris and pupils, assess PERRLA |
How do the pupils react to light? | constriction |
What does accommodation mean? | it refelcts the movement of ciliary muscles |
What is the Snellen eye chart? | normal eye chart used to rate vision acuity; should be 20/20 |
What is the Amsler chart? | used to test for macular degeneration; central vision is usually the first part affected |
How do the pupils accommodate for distance? | dilate |
What happens when the pupils converge? | constriction |
What is the diagnostic positions test? | lead the patient through 6 cardinal positions of gaze; eyes follow penlight movement; looking for muscle weakness, nystagmus or lid lag |
What is nystagmus? | ticking of the eyes |
What is glaucoma? | increased pressure behind the eye; drainage canal is impaired in some way |
What is open angle glaucoma? | most common; narrowed drain |
What is closed angle glaucoma? | more severe; obstructed drain |
How does glaucoma present? | reduced vision, loss of peripheral, pupil dilation that doesn't change with light |
How is glaucoma treated? | eye drops or laser eye surgery |
What is macular degeneration? | deterioration of the macua (central area of retina) resulting in blind spots or blurry vision |
Whar are risk factors for macular degeneration? | advanced age, smoking, obesity, light eyes, sun exposure, high cholesterol/fat/sugar, HTN, CVD, inactivity |
What are cataracts? | clumping of proteins buildup in lens and cause it to become blurry; develops slowly |
What is the leading cause of blindness worldwide? | cataracts |
What are symptoms of cataracts? | poor night vision, sensitivity to light or glare, halos around lights, double vision in single eye |
What is entropion? | an inward droop of the eye |
What is ectropion? | a downward droop of the eye |
What is arcus senilis? | a gray or white arc above and below the outer part of the cornea; usually results from high cholesterol |
