This is to help me study my social studies vocab.
Term | Definition |

French and Indian War | A conflict in 1754 between British Settlers and France, including its American Indian Allies. Part of larger war called the Seven Years War. In North America, the Ohio River Valley was the center of dispute. |
Albany Plan of Union | An attempt to create one general government for the British colonies. |
Treaty of Paris | In 1763, a treaty signed by Britain and France, ended the French power in North America. Britain gained Canada and all lands east of the Mississippi River except New Orleans, Britain finally gained Florida. |
petition | Formal written request to someone in authority, signed by a group of people. |
boycott | Refuse to buy certain goods or services. |
Writ of Assitance | A legal document that allowed British military officers the right to inspect a ship's cargo without giving a specific reason. |
Committee of Correspondence | Members of the committee regularly wrote letters and pamphlets to report to other colonies about events happening in Massachusetts. |
Civil Disobediance | A nonviolent refusal to obey laws that one considers unjust. An example is the Boston Tea Party. |
militia | An army of citizens who serve as soldiers during an emergency. |
minutemen | Volunteers that trained regularly to be ready at minutes notice. In towns near Boston, minutemen collected weapons and gunpowder. |
patriots | Colonists who favored war against Britain . |
loyalists | American colonists who remained loyal to Britain. Included wealthy merchants and former officials of the royal government. |
Townshend Act | Taxed goods such as glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea. |
Sons of Liberty | Formed by angry colonists to protest British policies. Staged mock hangings, cloth ,or straw. Hangings were meant to show tax collectors what might happen if they collected unpopular taxes. |
