Question | Answer |
---|---|
Chemical reaction | a process that involves a rearrangement of atoms, molecules, or ions. |
Law of Conservation of Mass | mass is neither created nor destroyed |
balanced chemical equation | same number of each element on both sides of the equation |
mass of products equals | mass of reactants |
coefficients | numbers that are before the formula; they affect every element in the formula |
subscripts | numbers that "float" below the line; they only affect the element that is right before them |
reactants | what goes in (usually on the left hand side of the chemical equation) |
products | what comes out (usually on the right hand side of the chemical equation) |
Open system | Matter can enter or escape the system. |
Closed system | Matter is not allowed to enter or leave the system. |
