conscience formation

conscience is not: | majority opinion, feelings, superego, "Jiminy Cricket" moment, gut-instinct, myth |
conscience is: | awareness of God's call to be, awareness of God's call to know and do the good and to love, practical judgement of the intellect |
moral awareness | the ability to recognize ethical values and principles |
moral decision-making | the ability to make practical decisions in light of ethical values and principles |
virtue | a good habit that empowers us to do good with ease |
vice | a bad habit, that inclines us to choose the evil rather than the good |
seer | a person in tune with truth - a prophet |
what does the S in seer stand for? | study the facts |
what does the first E in seer stand for? | elect a course of action |
what does the second E in seer stand for? | execute the action |
what does the R in seer stand for? | review the decision |
what must you alway to with your conscience? | always form and keep informing your conscience and follow you conscience |
what do you do when you study (seer)? | gather information about the moral object / the motive, and the circumstances involved / review the fundamental principles of morality and consider how best to apply essential moral rules |
what do you do when you elect (seer)? | decisions should be based on whether the proposed action is consistent with who you are as God's creation made in God's image / an essential part of making this decision is to pray |
what do you do when you execute (seer)? | this involves responsibility / you must do what you conscience tells you is right or you sin / be an actor, not a reactor. take control of your own actions and own them |
what do you do when you review (seer)? | evaluate and reflect on the actions already preformed / if we have taken the steps to form a good conscience, then our conscience will be clear / if we have gone against what we know we should have done and sinned, then our conscience can help us repent |
fortitude | "the moral virtue that ensured firmness in difficulties, and constancy in the pursuit of the good" |
what level does decision making happen on? | a personal and communal level |
prudence | the moral virtue that inclines us to lead good, ethical, and moral lives of action; "right reason in action," as St. Thomas Aquinas put it |
discernment | a decision-making process that attends to the implications and consequences of an action or choice |
moral objective | the moral content of an action that suggests whether the action is directed toward the true good |
intention | the aim or objective of a course of action |
circumstances | the conditions or facts attending an event and having some bearing on it. circumstances can increase oe decrease the moral goodness or evil of an action |
means | a method, course of action, or instrument by which something can be accomplished |
consequences | a result or effect of an action or condition |
