Expansion Diffusion | Constant origin Spreads from origin Contagious |
Relocation Diffusion | Changing of origin Traditions/customs stay the same |
Hierarchical Diffusion | Starts from ruler/leader Moves down through society who follow the leader |
Stimulus Diffusion | Relocation, then a change Origin changes Traditions/customs change due to new location Part of reterritorialization |
Assimilation | Blended cultures Creates new culture Starts with 2 separate cultures with combining ideas |
Transculturation | Shared traits between cultures Cultures identify independently |
Acculturation | Acquired traits from a culture Dominant culture controls a minority culture Minority follows traits of dominant Not assimilation because one culture is in control of the other |
Multiculturation | Separate cultures Cultures live side by side No changes between cultures Cultures DO NOT affect each other |
Syncretism | Needed traits for a culture One culture takes traits from another culture necessary to survive Event oriented exchange of traits |
Indigenous Culture | “Native Activity” If exposed to a modern culture, there could be a change in methods Ex. Makkah |
Localism | What is in a place shows the culture of that place |
Neo Localism | Introduce something into a local culture while holding own identity When someone enters an area they will experience mixed cultures Ex. Lindsberg |
Ethnic Neighborhoods | Section of a community that represents a point of origin Provides support Same background of people Same traditions/customs/food/dress People feel safer and more secure when with others Ex. Little Italy, Chinatown (In NYC) |
Cultural Appropriation | To take without permission Used and not authenticated Someone claims a cultural trait for themselves, but does not credit original culture |
Cultural Appreciation | To take without permission Used BUT authenticated Someone claims a cultural trait for themselves but credits the original culture Provides respect to original culture |
Authenticity | To be authentic, something must be where it originally came from. Remade = Not authentic Ex. If the Eiffel Tower is moved to a new spot, it will not be authentic because it is not experienced at the original site |
Cultural Trait | Developed and passed down through cultures Generation to Generation Ex. Specific foods/drinks consumed represents the cultural traits |
Custom | How you do something day to day, developed over time Ex. People in America eat early breakfast, mid day lunch, and end of day dinner, but people in Argentina eat early breakfast, late lunch (very large), then lunch style snack at night |
Culture Complex | More than one trait makes a culture complex Two cultures with the same trait is also complex Makes it easier to narrow down what culture is being talked about Specific details All cultures have more than one trait, which makes them complex |
Cultural Landscape | The human imprint on the landscape Popular culture (from globalization) can change the landscape |
Cultural Landscape Convergence | Causes a place to lose uniqueness Referred to as placelessness Happens due to globalization making places look the same |
Globalization | How popular culture spreads around the world Results: 1: Greater interaction between countries 2: Deepen our relationships 3: Interdependence - starts as positive but turns negative quickly |
