Ethical and Legal Behavior

Ethical Dilemmas You want to choose a course of action that is both ethical and professional.
Ethics The principles of right and wrong that guide an individual in making decisions; a system of moral principals.
Professional Ethics Standards that govern how members of a profession are to make decisions when the way they should behave is not clear-cut.
Importance of professional ethics in the workplace. - Workplace ethics promotes teamwork and cooperation. - Workplace ethics protect company assets. - Workplace ethics provides emotional security.
Autonomy: Self-Determination Respect the patient's rights to self-determination. Ultimately, autonomy gives a patient the right to privacy, freedom of choice and acceptance of responsibility for one's own actions.
Beneficence: To Do Good More than not harming the patient, the dental professional is ethically obligated to promote the patient's welfare.
Confidentiality: Patient's Right to Privacy The dental professional should maintain patient records with the protection of the welfare of the patient top of mind.
Veracity: Telling the Truth Communicate truthfully and without deception, and maintain intellectual integrity.

Patient rights under HIPAA 1-3 1. Obtain a list of whom we have shared their health information with for the past six years. 2. Request to amend their medical record 3. Request other communications such as asking to be notified of lab results only at work and not at home.
Patient rights under HIPAA 4-5 4. Review and copy their medical record. 5. Request restriction on the use or sharing of their information, such as "opting out" of the hospital directory.

PPE Personal Protective Equipment
Examples of PPE? - Masks - Face shields - Eye covers - Gowns - Gloves
Direct supervision Level of supervision in which the dentist is physically present when the dental assistant performs delegated functions
Indirect supervision The dentist must authorize procedure and be in the office while the procedures are performed
General supervision Level of supervision in which the dental assistant performs delegated functions according to the instructions of the dentist, who is not necessarily physically present.
