Changes in Ecosystem

stable steady or unchanging
competition when animals fight for the same needed resources.
succession the process of an ecosystem changing to become a new and different ecosystem.
limiting factors any resource that limits a population's growth
carrying capacity the largest population an area can support.
invasive species A species that is introduced
secondary succession When plants and animals return to a disturbed or damaged land.
symbiosis a relationship between two or more kinds of organisms over time.
mutualism a relationship two kinds of organisms that helps both organisms.
commensalism a relationship between two kinds of organisms that helps one organism without harming the other.
parasitism a relationship between two organisms that helps one organism but harms the other.
extinct a species that has died out on Earth. None left.
pioneer community the first stage of succession when a community settles in a once barren place
intermediate community the second stage of succession when a community has more life beyond moss and lichens. Grassess, shrubs, poplars and willow trees begin to grow.
climax community the last stage of succession in an area. Hardwood tries take the place of pine trees and the area is teeming with life.
resources food, water, space, and other things organisms need to survive
primary succession The beginning of a community where few, if any, living things exist.
pioneer species The first species to live in a lifeless area.
endangered species A species that is in danger of becoming extinct
threatened species A species at risk of becoming endangered.
