What are the five skeletal functions? supports surrounding tissues, protects vital organs & soft tissue, leverages & attachment for muscles, produces RBCs &WBCs& Platelets, and stores mineral salts
What is PTH? parathyroid hormone, via the parathyroid gland, stimulates bone reabsorption, regulates calcium, timuates function of vitamin d
What is Calcitonin? via the thyroid gland, inhibits calcium loss, increases calcium storage in the bones
How does Estrogen play a role bones? It stimulates bone growth
What is the peak age of bone growth? 35 years old
What are normal musculoskeletal changes that occur with aging? decreased strength, endurance and coordination, slowed movement, muscle mass is replaced by fat, thickening of cartilage at the joints, synovial membrane thickens
What is Degenerative joint disease/osteoarthritis? steady degeneration of the joints, no remissions, no systemic symptoms, from repeated truama, 80% women, no known cause
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis? inflammation of connective tissues, remissions/exacerbations, chronic/systemic disease, adults onset is 20-40 y/o, mostly women, no known cause
How is RA diagnosed? ESR-sed rate=inflammation, + rheumatoid factor, elevated c reative protein
What are the goals of treatment with RA? Reduce pain, prevent deformity, maximize function
What causes Gout? Purines- contained in red wine, fish, red meat, ect. which have crystal deposits into the bone. Mainly effects the great toe.
What are the symptoms of Gout? Acute pain, swelling, redness warmth, fever, "attacks"
What does the medication Benemid do with Gout? increases the excretion of uric acids
What are two antihypouricemics that are used with Gout? Cholchicine (acutes attacks only) and Zyloprim (blocks formation of crystals)
