Health, Wellness, and Health Disparities

Morbidity | How frequently a disease occurs |
Mortality | The number of deaths resulting from a disease |
Disease | Pathologic changes occur *** genetics, toxins, etc. could increase risk *** |
Illness | The unique way each person responds to a disease |
Acute Illness | Rapid onset, short course, and diagnostic tests and treatments |
Chronic Illness | Slow onset, last a long time, irreversible changes, periods of remission and exacerbation |
Remission | A patient who is currently not experiencing any symptoms |
Exacerbation | A patient who has symptoms that come back |
Stages of Illness | -Experiencing symptoms (first indication of illness) -Assuming the sick role (accepting you are ill) -Assuming a dependent role (making changes b/c of diagnosis) -Achieving recovery and rehabilitation |
Equity | Helping everyone maintain their highest level of health individually |
Equality | Giving everyone the same options, but some might not be applicable for every individual |
Physical Dimension Affecting Health | Genetics, age, developmental level |
Emotional Dimension Affecting Health | How the mind impacts the body, how we deal with stress |
Intellectual Dimension Affecting Health | Overall cognitive abilities, health literacy, education |
Environmental Dimension Affecting Health | Air, water, food pollutants, sanitation of neighborhood |
Sociocultural Dimension Affecting Health | Family life, community support |
Spiritual Dimension Affecting Health | Religion can impact how you think about health |
Primary Health Promotion and Illness Prevention | Promoting health and preventing illness before it ever happens ; what YOU can do to stop if from happening (vaccines, exercise, smoking cessation) |
Secondary Health Promotion and Illness Prevention | Early detection, identify illness, and quick treatment, but not prevention (SCREENINGS) |
Tertiary Health Promotion and Illness Prevention | Illness has been diagnosed and determined, so this works on giving the highest quality of care and life (SUPPORT GROUPS, EDUCATING PATIENT) |
Health Belief Model | The way that people perceive their overall health |
Health Promotion Model | The way people interact with their environment as they pursue health |
Health-Illness Continum | Health is ever changing for every person, so anyone can be on the "pendulum" |
