Stephen Douglas Supported popular sovereignty. Ran against Lincoln.

Compromise of 1850 Made when California applied for state hood.
Compromise of 1850 Stopped slave trade in Washington D.C
Compromise of 1850 Turned Mexican Cession into Utah and New Mexico, Popular Sovereignty would determine slavery.
Wilmot Proviso. Idea to ban slavery in Mexican Cession.
Fugitive Slave Act. Any free slave could be on trail to go back to plantation.
Uncle Tom's Cabin. Controversial book about slavery.
Harriet Beecher Stowe. Author of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
James Buchanan. Democrat, won presidential election in 1856.
David Scott Decision. Slave sued for his freedom, slavery could spread anywhere in the U.S
Dred Scott vs Stanford. Supreme court, ruled slaves propriety, not citizen, ruled Missouri compromise and popular sovereignty wrong.
Republican party. Political party, formed to stop the spread of Slavery. Abolitionists, Free Soldiers, Northern Whigs.
Free soil party. Formed as a result of the WIlmot Proviso, First party to oppose the spread of slavery.
Kansas Nebraska Act. Repealed the Missouri Compromise, Popular sovereignty would settle slavery in Louisiana.
John Brown. Abolitionist,Killed pro slavery supports in Nebraska, planned slave rebellion in the south.
Bleeding Kansas. Mini civil war broke out due to Kansas Nebraska Act.
Charles Sumner. Northern Senator that condemned the violence in Kansas. Hit with a cane.
Preston Brooks. Southern Congress man Canes Charles Sumner.
John C. Fremont. Republican, Presidential candidate in 1856.
Abraham Lincoln. Republican, From Illinois, Opposed slavery, elected president 1860.
A house divided. Lincolns famous speech about Union falling apart. Given during the Lincoln Douglas debates.
Lincoln Douglas Debates. Seven Debates, Lincoln vs Douglass, competed for senate 1858.
Roger Taney. Chief Justice of Supreme court in Dred Scott vs Sanford.
Election of 1860. Lincoln becomes president, main issue spread of slavery.
Harper's Ferry. US army arsenal, Virginia, John Brown raided.
Popular Sovereignty. Idea that people vote on an issue.
Pottawatomie Creek Massacre. John brown hacked five pro slavery supporters to death in Kansas.
