Identify modes of infection transmission in the dental office.
Term | Definition |
---|---|
1. Direct transmission | occurs when pathogens are transferred between individuals without a contaminated intermediate person, object, or environmental surface. Ie., when blood from an infected person enters the body of a person through direct contact with breaks in the skin. |
2. Indirect transmission | occurs when pathogens are transferred between individuals via a contaminated intermediate person, object, or environmental surface. Ie., contaminated patient-care items are shared between patients without having been cleaned, disinfected, or sterilized. |
3. Airborne transmission | is a form of respiratory transmission associated with inhalation of droplet nuclei, i.e., residuals of droplets ranging in size from 1-5 µm that remain infective over time and space. Ie., a sneeze |
4. Parenteral transmission | refers to the passage or transfer of potentially dangerous pathogens via a way other than through the digestive system. Ie., substance is being delivered via the syringe or catheter that is contaminated with a pathogen. |
5. Bloodborne transmission | the bodily fluids of an infected person must enter into the bloodstream of another person. The most common cause of transmission in the workplace is when an infected person's blood enters another person's bloodstream through an open wound. |
