Nature of Atom

Year 10 Terminology

TermDefinition
Physical change A change that results in a substance changing states of matter, generally reversed.
Chemical change A change that results in new substances bring formed , usually difficult to reverse.
Matter All substances around us that has mass and occupies volume.
Atom Tiny particles that make up matter.
Electron Negatively charged sub-atomic particle that makes up an atom. Surrounds the atomic nucleus.
Proton Positively charged sub-atomic particle that makes up an atom.
Neutron Sub-atomic particle that makes up an atom, contains no charge and found in the centre of the atom.
Element Consists of one type of atom.
Compound Consists of two or more different elements chemically bonded.
Molecule Consists of two of the same or different elements chemically bonded.
Diatomic molecule consists of two of the same elements chemically bonded.
Pure substance Matter made up of one type of particle that cannot be separated physically.
Impure (mixture) substance Matter made up of different particles that can only be separated physically.
Atomic number In a neutral atom, it is the number of electrons as well as the number of protons.
Mass number Is the number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
Valence electrons Electrons found in the outer most energy level (electron shell)
Ions A charged atom.
Cations Positively charged ions
Anions Negatively charged ions
Reactants in a chemical equation A substance that is present at the start of a chemical reaction
Product/s in a chemical equation A substance that is present at the end of a chemical reaction.
