In Fort Dodge, Iowa, what law pertaining to marriage passed in 1907? Everyone between ages 25 and 45 were to be married or fined.
Where the did the term "Spinster" come from? 17th century single women usually had no choice but to live with family and spin flax and wool for them.
Why were bachelor's penalized? To ensure they enjoyed less freedom than if they were married.
What were some bachelor's offered in New England if they succumbed to wed lock? Free home sites.
Which location made courtship and marriage so difficult that only the extremely determined would succeed? The Amanda Sect
What is bundling? A custom that occurred with courting couples in 1700's New England. Couples were in individual linens and separated by a board.
What is a "Sailor's Valentine?" Customized shell mosaics.
What is the wedding custom known as a "shivaree"? Bachelor friends of the groom gathered under the new couple's window and partied until the groom drank with them and was later abducted and pranked by the group of uninvited guests.
What is a "smock wedding"? Windows would marry their new husbands in their underwear so the new husband would not inherit debt from the deceased's property. She was then given fine new garments to wear from her new husband.
What does the term "dollar princess" refer to? Women whose new husbands inherited millions of dollars and shares from their wealthy families upon marriage. The prenup contracted the man to retain it regardless of maritial status.
After Nancy Langhorne Shaw married Waldorf Astor, how did she make history after John Jacob Astor passed away? Her husband was forced to give up his seat in the house of commons, so she ran for the vacant seat and became the first woman to sit in parliment. She served 26 years in parliment.
Starting in June of 1942, what did U.S. soldiers have to do if they wished to get married? They were required to request permission of their commanding officers in writing.
What happened to some U.S. soldier's when they refused to marry an American girl? Their rank was broken.
