Oxygen Therapy

Hypercarbia increased partial pressure of arterial CO2 levels (PACO2) Need lower levels of O2 delivery usually 1-2 L/min via nasal cannula to prevent decreased resp effort (a low level is a patient's drive to breath!)
ABG Arterial Blood Gas - best measure to determine O2 therapy needs and to eval it's effects
Nursing Care for the pt w/O2 Therapy Clear Oral, Nasal & Tracheal Secretions as appropriate, Maintain Patent Airway, Set up O2 equip and administer thru a heated humidifed system, Monitor the O2 Liter Flow, Monitor position of O2 delivery device, check to ensure of correct prescribed dose
Nursing Care for the pt w/O2 Therapy (cont) Monitor pulse oximetry ABG's as appropriate, replace O2 mask/cannula when removed, observe for signs of O2 induced hypoventilation, Monitor for signs of O2 toxicity and absorption atelectasis, Monitor
