Sport - Respiratory System - key terms
Term | Definition |

Nasal cavity | Hairs filter dust, pollen and other particles. Air is warmed and moistened |
Pharynx | The throat. Connects the nasal cavity to the larynx. |
Larynx | The voice box. Has rigid walls of cartilage. Connects the pharynx to the trachea. |
Trachea | The wind pipe. Surrounded by rings of cartilage. Branches into the left & right bronchi. |
Epiglottis | Small flap of cartilage that allows food to pass into the stomach and not into the lungs |
Lungs | an organ that allows oxygen to be drawn into the body |
Bronchi | branch off the trachea and carry air into the lungs |
Bronchioles | small airways that extend from the bronchi. Connect the bronchi to the alveoli. Approx 1mm in diameter |
Alveoli | tiny air sacs in the lungs. where gaseous exchange happens |
Diaphragm | a flat muscle located beneath the lungs. involved in inspiration and expiration |
Thoracic cavity | the chamber in the chest protected by the ribs & sternum |
Internal intercostal muscles | muscles inside the ribcage. they draw the ribs downwards & inwards |
External intercostal muscles | muscles outside the ribcage. they draw the ribs upwards and outwards |
