Population Density | the number of people who live in a defined land area |
Arithmetic Density | The total number of people divided by the total land area. |
Physiological Density | The number of people per unit of area of arable land |
Agricultural Density | The ratio of the number of farmers to the total amount of land suitable for agriculture. |
Population Distribution | Term applied to how a group of people in an area are spread out across it |
Carrying Capacity | the maximum number of people who can be realistically sustained by the geography of that area. |
Demography | the study of human populations – their size, composition and distribution across space – and the process through which populations change. |
Natural Increase Rate (NIR) | The percentage by which a population grows in a year. |
Doubling Time | the projected amount of time that it will take for a given population to double. |
Life Expectancy | How long someone in an area is expected to live. |
Crude Birth Rate (CBR) | The total number of live births in a year for every 1000 people alive in the society. |
Total Fertility Rate (TFR) | The average number of children who would be born per woman (or per 1,000 women) |
Crude Death Rate (CDR) | The total number of deaths in a year for every 1000 people alive in the society. |
Zero Population Growth (ZPG) | When the population has no growth. |
Sex Ratio | The ratio between males and femlaes in a country. |
Maternal Mortality Rate | Number of deaths per 1000 women giving birth. |
Infant Mortality Rate | The percentage of children who die before their first birthday within a particular area or country. |
Population Pyramid | A model used in population geography to show the age and sex distribution of a particular population. |
Dependency Ratio | the percentage of people within a population who are either too young or too old to work and must therefore be supported by the labor of working adults within that population. |
Epidemiology | the branch of medical science concerned with the incidence, distribution, and control of diseases that affect large numbers of people. |
Malthusian Theory | the world's population was growing faster than the rate of food production, and as a result, mass starvation would occur. |
Epidemiologic Transition | Distinctive causes of death in each stage of the demographic transition. |
Pronatalist | a belief that promotes the reproduction of human life. |
Antinatalist | encourages families to have fewer children |
Pandemic | a pandemic refers to a disease that has spread worldwide |
