What are benzotropines prescribed for? anxiety; to provide sedation, induce sleep, prevent seizures and prepare clients for general anesthesia
People with high levels of anxiety have low levels of what neurotransmitter? GABA
How do benzotropines work? by increasing the activity of GABA
How fast acting are benzotropines? fast acting onset in 1 hour duration 4-6 hours
Where are benzotropines metabolized? in the liver
Where are the benzotropines excreted? kidney
When taking antianxiety meds and digoxin are used what can potentially happen? the digoxin level may be increased leading to dig toxicity
What should not be taken with antianxiety drugs because they interfere with absorption into the bloodstream? antacids
What time limit should antianxiety drugs have for use? a few months
Why is Buspar so different from other antianxiety drugs? it does not cause sleepiness or muscle relaxation
How do antidepressant meds work? increasing neurotransmitter activity
What other disorders are indicated with antidepressants? bipolar disorders, panic disorders, OCD, enuresis, bulimia and neuropathic pain
How long before antidepressants take effect? 1 to 4 weeks
What food must be avoided with MAOIs? alcohol, aged cheese, sour cream, caffeine, avocado, bananas, fava and broad beans, canned figs and overripe fruit Box 6-1
What are the side effects of SSRIs dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, constipation,diarrhea, anorexia, change in taste etc
What drug is commonly used to treat manic disorders? lithium
What is lithium? a salt
Who is lithium contraindicated for? pregnant women and those with kidney failure
How is lithium excreted? by the kidneys
What level of lithium in the blood is considered toxic? greater than 1.5mEq/L
how long does lithium therapy need to be done before clinical improvement can be seen>? as long as 3 weeks
What are antipsychotics also called? neuroleptics or tranquilizers
What is EPS? extrapyramidal side effects
What defines EPS? abnormal movements produced by imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain
What are the PNS effects of antipsychotics? blurred vision, sensitivity to bright light, tachycardia, hypotension
What is noncompliance? not following a prescribed treatment plan
What is informed consent? process of presenting clients with info about the risks benefits and side effects of specific treatments
