AP Human vocab from unit 1 that may be important for the ap exam

absolute distance the distance that can be measured with standard length
distance decay the diminishing in importance and eventual disappearance from its origin
environmental determinism the belief that land forms and climate are the most powerful forms shaping human behavior and societal development
globalization increased interaction between geographically distinct regions
place refers to the specific human & physical characteristics of a location
possibilism a view that acknowledges limits on the effects of the natural environment and focuses more on the role that human culture plays
relative direction refers to general reference (left, right, forward, etc.)
relative distance the distance between 2 places based on known places
relative location description of where something is in relation to other things
sense of place perception of characteristics of a place based on personal beliefs
site the characteristics oft he immediate location
situation the location of a place relative to its surroundings and other places
sustainability the use of earth's resources in ways that ensure the availability in the future
toponym place names
cholopleth map uses various colors, shades of one color, or patterns to show the location and distribution of spatial data
cartogram the sizes of countries are shown according to some specific statistic
conic projection lines of longitude converge and lines of latitude are curved (sizes & shape are both close to reality)
dot distribution map shows the specific location and distribution of something across the territory of the map
functional (nodal) region defined by an activity that occurs across the region
graduated symbol map uses symbols of different sizes to indicate different amounts of something
isoline map uses lines that connect points of equal value to depict variations in the data across space
locator map show illustrations used in books and advertisements to show specific locations mentioned in the text
map projection the process of showing a curved surface on a flat surface
map scale the relationship between a distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the earth
mercator projection directions are shown accurately with lines of latitude and longitude, land masses near the poles appear large
physical map shows & labels natural features (river, mountain, desert, etc.)
plat map shows & labels property lines and details of land ownership
political map shows & labels human-created boundaries and designations (countries, capitals, states, etc.)
robinson projection no major distortions & the oval shape appears like a globe, but the area, shape, size, & direction are all distorted
thematic map shows spatial aspects of information or of a phonomenon
vernacular (perceptual) region defined by the informal sense of place that people ascribe to them
